“In order to be a mentor, and an effective one, one must care. You must care. You don’t have to know how many square miles are in Idaho, you don’t need to know what is the chemical makeup of chemistry, or of blood or water. Know what you know and care about the person, care about what you know and care about the person you’re sharing with.” — Maya Angelou
During my first decade in PR, I constantly sought out mentors who could help guide me along my professional career path. This guidance allowed me to evolve my skillset at a time when I was just learning the ropes.
Now, I find myself moving from player to coach. With the responsibility of leadership comes a new focus on employee development, working with my teams so they can become the best PR professionals they can be. As leaders and career coaches, we’re in the background, finding success in the achievements of our teams versus our own. In many ways, being a mentor is similar to being a sports coach. It can be challenging at times, but more often than not, it’s incredibly rewarding.
At PAN, I don’t just feel lucky that I can continue my streak of great mentors, but I can serve in that role to others as well. PAN’s career coach model ensures that each employee has a dedicated manager who is responsible for their individual career growth. My dedicated SVP, Megan Kessler, is the ultimate boss-lady and has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
That’s what is unique about PAN – our leaders are passionate about helping their dedicated team of employees find their role within the agency and in the integrated marketing and PR industry as a whole.
